Addition and Subtraction

Addition and Subtraction can be solved by using two strategies: counting on/back, rounding and compensating.

Counting on is adding foward using fingers when the number is added is under ten. Counting back is subtracting using fingers, when the number subtracted is under ten.

Rounding and compensating is rounding the added or subtracted number to the nearest tidy number, then compensating for the rounding. Compensating is done by splitting the new number into the old number and the leftover.

Counting on/back and rounding and compensating are easy strategies for addition and subtraction, when numbers get to big to be solved with basic facts.

Ki - O - Rahi tournament

My Team and I competed in the interschool tournament.

First one of the school teams performed a welcoming and a song to us. We were split into a year 5 and 6 team. We then played our first match against Pou which was a Maori school. We had to choose our roles. We were either kiuma which is attacker or taniwha which is defender When the match ended the score was 17 to 8.

Afterwards we played our second match against stonefields The first role we picked was kiuma. We got to switch over to taniwha and kiuma twice.  After our match finished we beat them 10 to 5.

To finish up we had our last two games facing panama road and the other stonefields team. Our first match was close but we lost by three points, the score was 7 to 10. Next we had our last and final game against the other stonefields team. After it ended we lost again 7 to 14.

I enjoyed getting to play ki - o rahi because I scored some points for the team. We could've thought of another strategy when playing our final matches instead of the one we already used in the other 2 matches.

Party Popper Creation

My company and I designed one party popper each for us.

First we created our drawing to put on our party popper. We chose to draw a game called among us. This game is when people gather together to find out who are the two imposters that are trying to eliminate the crewmates to win. We finished designing our party popper and now doing the striker.

Afterwards we created our striker. For the striker we used a nut. We were going to use a whiteboard marker but we could not.

Finally we added the filling and tested it all together. We added a specific amount of filling, we used small fuzz balls and glitter stickers. We tested the party popper and it worked very effectively.

The experience was amazing because our party popper worked very effectively and all the filling went high. We could have added more filling to make a bigger celebration.

Party popper Prototype

My company, and I created a party popper design.

First we modelled all the parts to see which would be best For example we used a thicker rubber band instead of a short rubber band. We tested both rubber bands to see which one would hit the cup more effectively. We found out that the thicker rubber band worked more effectively than the shorter rubber band.

Afterwards we assembled our fixes that we are going to use. We changed the small plastic cup into a bigger plastic cup and used a whiteboard marker for our weight to shoot the filling out more stronger. The whiteboard marker was very strong when shooting up to the cup.

Finally we tested all the updated design options.  All of the designed options worked very effectively and strongly.

I learned a lot about how to design a party popper and what it needs. My company skittle poppers, and I found out that all the parts work strongly and effectively.

Revision

We did revision about all the things we did during the term.

First we played a memory game with Whaea Odie - where we find two cards that are the same, then you have to say the maori word.

Next we answered questions in Maori. I used the Maori dictionary to help me define the words that I do not know. One of them were: ko wai o hoa which means who are your friends?

I enjoyed this activity because I got to learn new words in Maori.

Basic Facts Boxes

I completed basic facts boxes but multiplication. The goal for this activity is to answer the questions quickly and accurate to try and get all the answers correct and a good record.

I got 100 out 100 questions correct and my time that I got was 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

Next time for my goal is to do division because I know most of my multiplication.
